Wealth Inequality Put In Perspective

Accumulating wealth can be understood as a race down an infinite stretch of road, with the goal being to get as far from the starting line (0 wealth) as possible in the positive direction (don’t go in debt).

  • Some people are born at the starting line, some people are born 1 billion meters past the starting line.
  • Some people are born with advantages like a jet plane or roller skates, or some people are born with disadvantages like they don’t have legs or can’t ride in jets.
  • Some people face obstacles that make their journey more difficult, while some people find help and support to travel faster and more comfortably.

This is not a fair race.  At present, there is no-one in charge of equalizing this playing field besides your religious beliefs.

Eye Contact

I once ran into two groups of people, a group of friends walking behind a group of strangers.  I looked with no facial expression at my friends, then looked at the group in front.  Then smiled a bit in the general direction of the 3+ people I knew and then walked by them.  This was rude and super fail eye contact–if you are friends, you should greet each other respectively.  From their perspective, they saw me staring in their direction, then away, then smiling randomly towards them without eye contact–I made none of them feel like I recognized or acknowledged them personally.

That is the power of eye contact: to let someone know that you are who they are focusing on.  People will like you more if you make eye contact with them, and the interaction will feel more genuine.  That’s not to say you can’t look away during a conversation, but it does mean that you should be careful about how you look away, because your body language may communicate that you are disinterested or not paying attention.

Insecurity

  • Having dinner the other day, I couldn’t help but constantly think to myself–am I being interesting right now, or am I being boring?  Am I being a jerk right now? Arrogant? Then I caught myself: STOP BEING SO INSECURE!  Just be yourself, and accept whatever happens: it’s not about being or not being certain adjectives or traits.  Life is a range, not black and white: everyone is some degree of everything, and the degree is constantly changing.  Just go with it, and react to life according to the principles you believe in.
  • People who are afraid of being judged may be in denial of being bad at things, trapped in perfectionist thinking (Overcome Perfectionism)
